The Indian budget phone market is huge and due to the throat cutting competition companies are forced to deliver maximum with a reasonable price tag of under Rs.10,000. Xiaomi has been at the top in this segment for a long time with its budget kings like Redmi1s, Redmi2, Redmi3s, etc. Now the company has come up with the new Redmi 4 which has the potential for absolutely killing the competition! No, we are not exaggerating the things but the phone offers some great internals which makes it a win win deal for customers.

Excellent Battery Life
Good Performance

Xiaomi is pretty much the only name that comes to everyone’s mind when they hear someone talking about budget smartphones. Well, at least that’s the case in India. Gone are the days of feature phones and low entry level handsets, as Xiaomi has completely changed the face of the so-called ‘budget segment’ in the country. These devices are so popular that no one is even interested in buying the Android One smartphones from Spice, Micromax, etc. That’s the kind of popularity we are talking about here with Xiaomi.

Now, let's talk about the phone.

Build:

Redmi 4 certainly feels sturdy in hand. It feels more solid in the hand compared to last year's Redmi 3s prime. It is made of metal and it sits nicely in the hand as well. The buttons on the sides are nice and tactile. The phone is 139.2mm tall, 70mm wide and 8.7 mm thick (5.48 x 2.76 x 0.34 in).
It weighs a 150 g (5.29 oz). Also, it has an all metal back.

Internals:

The Redmi 4 sports a Qualcomm MSM8940 Snapdragon 435 chipset which is an Octa-core CPU clocked at 1.4GHz based on ARM's Cortex-A53. It is coupled with Adreno 505 GPU and 2GB or 3GB RAM options. The phone uses a hybrid sim solution and accepts a micro-sim and a nano-sim/micro-sd card upto 128GB. The phone comes in two variants, 2GB/32GB and 3GB/64GB configurations.

Display:

It has an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that covers 16M colours. It is a 5.0-inch panel with 70.7% screen-to-body ratio with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels (~294 ppi pixel density). The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass (unspecified version).

Camera:

The primary camera is a 13 MP sensor with a f/2.0 lens and support for phase detection autofocus and LED flash. The rear unit can shoot 1080p video @30fps. The secondary camera is a 5 MP sensor with f/2.2 lens. It can also shoot 1080p videos. The camera is the only down-point in this device. Not saying that it is bad but just an average camera at this price. It just gets its job done.

Sensors:

As always Xiaomi this time also haven't skipped any of the important sensors.
Fingerprint (rear-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass all are present on the board.

Battery:

Xiaomi says that the Redmi 4 comes with 2 days of battery life. And it is somewhat believable since it is powered by a 4,100 mAh. Now, for a smartphone with HD display and Snapdragon 435 SoC, this is indeed a lot of battery capacity to work with. If you are an average user, then you should be able to get 2-days worth of battery life out of it.

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is powered by really powerful internals for this price and together with the MIUI 8, it allows for an exceptional battery life as well. The icing on the cake is, however, the price here. For 8,999 INR (for 3GB + 32GB config), we simply can’t help but forget all the negatives or the only negative which is the mediocre camera performance.

So what are your thoughts about the device?? Let me know in the comment section below.
